DIY Face Brightening Orange Peel

Who doesn’t want to pamper themselves without breaking the bank? Women have been concocting their own skincare products since ancient times. While you can’t avoid the natural process of ageing, you can give your skin some TLC every week to help it bear the everyday wear and tear.

I stumbled upon this recipe for a DIY orange peel mask when I was looking for something gentler than store bought products containing synthetic ingredients to exfoliate my skin. It is so much easier to raid my fridge for ingredients whenever I feel that a little pampering is overdue. The best thing about this mask is that the results are instantaneous. I can see my skin glow and feel the softness the minute I am done rinsing it off. A word of warning, however. Removing gelatin face masks can be painful. The process can result in temporary red patches so it is best to apply this face mask at night before bed.

The first thing you need to do is take a heat resistant bowl and pour in ⅛ cup of orange juice. Next, mix in  1 egg yolk and 1 tsp of honey, following it with a packet of gelatin powder. Place the bowl in a double boiler and stir until the gelatin completely dissolves. Remove the bowl from the heat and let it cool. Test the mixture by sticking in a finger. It shouldn’t be too cool because then the gelatin won’t set up right and it shouldn’t be so hot that your skin burns.

Use an old makeup brush or your fingers to apply the mask to your face. Avoid putting the mask on your lips, your eyebrows and the sensitive skin around your eyes. Leave the mask on for 20 to 25 minutes and then peel it off in layers, starting at your jawbones and peeling upwards. Once you are finished, rinse your face with cool water to close and tighten the pores.

Orange juice is an excellent source of antioxidants. You can use this mask twice a week to help combat any damage to your skin due to free radicals. The honey and egg yolk in it will keep your skin moisturized, giving it a lovely glow.
